About
My name is Nikki Mildon and I am a qualified and experienced Counsellor in private practice in Tauranga.
I whakapapa back to Wairua and my Iwi is Ngati Kahunganunu and Putahi is my Marae. For the past 25 years I have lived in the Bay of Plenty. I live with my partner and 2 children. I am fortunate to be close by my extended family and enjoy spending time with them, reading and doing crafts.
Counselling
My background is in social services and I have 9 year’s experience, collectively, as a counsellor at Community Alcohol Drug Services (Youth Counsellor), Infant Child Adolescent Mental Health Services and a Kaupapa Māori Mental Health organisation, Te Puna Hauora Ki Uta Ki Tai. I have knowledge of working with ,people with Anxiety, depression and other mental health issues and supporting them and their whānau towards wellness. Also, I have supported people through grief and loss and have a background in working with trauma issues including, but not limited; childhood abuse and neglect, domestic violence, sexual abuse or assault and bullying.
Modalities and Approach
I come from a Narrative Therapy background and believe that the problem is the problem never the person and that people have strengths, knowledge that can be enriched through the therapeutic process and beyond. Depending on your needs I may use dream therapy, motivational interviewing and/or acceptance and commitment therapy. I have a thirst to further develop my knowledge and skills and consistently engage in professional development.
I do my utmost to provide a safe place for you to feel comfortable to speak from your heart and begin to identify values and goals and work towards these. I work hard to; listen, be present, empathetic, compassionate, open and trustworthy when meeting with people. I seek to work in collaboration with you to identify the issue you want support with and may; provide relevant information and education, reflect/summarise, ask questions or notice things in order to help you create a new awareness towards; a preferred way of being, goal or decision and support you to work towards this.
Special Interests
I have a passion for working with children, adolescent and Māori and I value the time and experience I have gained from working in a Kaupapa Māori organisation. I enjoy working from a holistic point of view and seek to, where appropriate, explore people’s whakapapa, follow Tikanga and Kawa protocols and uphold values of manakitanga, tino rangatiratanga and whanaungatanga.
