ELIGIBILITY
Bay of Plenty Therapy Foundation provides subsidised counselling for people that are unable to afford counselling and are not eligible for funding for funded counselling from any other source.
The process is really simple. Clients can refer themselves or be referred by any health professional, social services agency or support person.
This is not an emergency or crisis service. If you have a medical or mental health emergency please dial 111.
Otherwise have a look at other support services available or contact a counsellor directly.
To apply for subsidised counselling through BOP Therapy Foundation first check to see if you can answer 'yes' to the following questions:
If you have answered 'Yes" to all 3 of the questions above it appears that you are eligible for subsidised counselling through BOP Therapy Foundation, subject to sufficient funds being available. Please contact one of our counsellors directly to confirm and book an appointment.
If you have answered "No' to one or more of the questions above, unfortunately it appears you are not eligible for subsidised counselling through BOP Therapy Foundation. Please refer to our list of Other Support Services for other organisations who may be able to support you.
Funding
BOP Therapy Foundation will assist in meeting the cost of the counselling but you will be asked to financially contribute to the counselling. Please discuss your level of contribution directly with the counsellor. Funding is currently available in the following areas:
Children & Families
Funded counselling where issues are adversely impacting on a child/children under the age of 17.
Young People
Young people aged 17 - 24 who need additional support
Individuals & Couples
Individuals and couples of any age who meet the standard criteria for counselling through BOP Therapy Foundation.
To apply for funded counselling just follow these 3 easy steps:
1. Contact one of our counsellors by phone or email to discuss your situation.
2. If you meet the eligibility criteria ,and funding is available, the counsellor will complete and submit an application to Bay of Plenty Therapy Foundation on your behalf.
3. BOP Therapy Foundation will review your application and, if funds are available, approve subsidised counselling sessions based on what you can afford to contribute and the level of support required or defer the application until funding is available.

- Do you reside in the Tauranga area? Including Te Puke, Pukehina, Katikati, Waihi Beach (excluding Waihi). This area extends from the southern end of the Athenree Gorge (SH2) to the top of the Kaimai’s (SH29), Pukehina (SH2), Paengoroa (SH33) and where Oropi Road meets SH36. Waihi Beach is included as are any tributary roads that lead clients to mostly use a service centre located in the area outlined above.
- Have other sources of funded counselling being ruled out? Other sources of funding include ACC, Ministry of Justice (Family Court), EAP (Employee Assistance Programmes) Service, Work and Income Disability Allowance (must be claimed if you are eligible. BOP Therapy Foundation will top-up to the standard hourly session rate if you meet the remaining criteria), Oranga Tamariki, Community Mental Health, Child & Adolescent Service (Hospital Services) , Primary Health Organisations (PHO's), School Counselling, BOPSASS (Bay of Plenty Sexual Assault Support Services) etc
- Can you show that you are unable to pay for professional counselling? Reasons you may be unable to pay for professional counselling include, indebtedness, beneficiary, single income, low income, community services card or eligibility for Working for Families subsidy or other specific reasons.
