About Me
I am the founder of Play-based Therapy Centre and have lived in Tauranga with my family for the past five years. I’m originally from South Africa, but since 2019 considered New Zealand my home. In South Africa, I worked as a statutory social worker for five years supporting children in foster care. Alongside my statutory role, I kept myself busy with group work and holiday programmes. When I moved to New Zealand I continued to support foster parents as well as children attending respite care facilities. In January 2021, I joined the mental health discipline to continue my passion for providing therapy services. I have experience in supporting children (their caregivers) with mild to severe mental health difficulties including trauma. I am an Incredible Years Parent Programme facilitator and enjoyed running groups with the members of the Incredible Years Specialist Services from Health NZ in the last three years. I am registered as a Social Worker with the Social Work Registration Board and am a member of ANZASW and the Association for Play Therapy.
In my free time, I keep myself busy with post-graduate studies and Aerial (Hoop) dancing where I don’t just perform but also teach adults and youth.
Cultural Training & Supervision
This is an area of special importance to me considering I am from a country with 11 different cultures. Throughout my training career being culturally sensitive has been important to me. Since I moved to New Zealand I had the opportunity to learn more about Kaupapa Maori and Maori-specific modalities. I attended several trainings to inform my practice, including Toi Ora Systems of Care Module 1-3, Unconscious Bias & Institutional Racism training. In my practice I utilise a holistic approach and where appropriate base my work on Te Whare Tapa Wha and the Meihana Model.
