My Counselling journey started after I was widowed when my two sons were in primary school. I then changed from Hospital Laboratory work to Secondary School teaching and later School Counselling and Family Therapy. I was brought up in West Auckland and have lived, and surfed, in many parts of New Zealand and overseas. The experience of meeting children and families from many cultures has informed my belief that we all seek a sense of belonging and peaceful community.

I work from a Narrative therapy approach which is a method of counselling that separates the person from the problem and encourages people to rely on their own knowledge and skills to reduce problems that enter their lives. Creating a safe and supportive environment is important when exploring the ups and downs of life, and enables people to draw upon their resources and strengths and feel more encouraged to make changes and find joy in their lives.

When working with families/whanau I am committed to a client led counselling approach that is culturally-safe and non-judgemental. I see members as a unit, and work with specific stories/narratives to achieve positive outcomes, build resilience and improve self-esteem. I also enjoy meeting with children of all ages and may incorporate Story Telling, Letters, Puppets, Art and Play Therapy, educational activities and games. At times, I may draw on my experience as a facilitator of the ‘Incredible Years Parenting Programme’. The focus is on children’s cognitive, social and emotional developmental stages, communication skills and non-violent discipline. Parents/caregivers also learn behaviour management techniques to promote competence and self-worth in children/adolescents, and build a more harmonious environment at home.

I have also supported children, and families/whanau who are experiencing grief and loss, relationship issues or family violence and trauma, to move forward with new found confidence and awareness. Individuals and families can meet at my home office, in their home or possibly school, and elsewhere at the client's convenience. I look forward to meeting with you.
