My name is Mary Hodson and I have been involved in the Bay of Plenty therapy Foundation since it started in 1992.
I have been working in counselling, health and disability related fields since I graduated in 1983.
My early work was with families that were struggling to cope with either alcohol abuse and its’ attendant problems or with anxiety, depression, compulsive and personality disorders or serious physical disability. I have also taught community based counselling courses and Occupational Therapy and Human Services courses at Polytechnics.
I am a member of both the New Zealand Association of Counsellors and the Association of Occupational Therapists. I am registered with the Occupational Therapy Board of New Zealand and the New Zealand Council for Educational Research which allows me to conduct formal assessments at the C Special level.
I am based in Tauranga and work from rooms in my home in central Mount Maunganui, close to the beach. There is plenty of parking and my rooms are easy to find. However, in an effort to preserve anonymity for my clients you won’t see a sign outside.
I have been in private practice for the last 17 years doing lots of work with couples that want to rescue, enhance or enrich their relationship. I tend to take a very practical, functional approach. It has its’ roots in General Systems theory and holism and is the legacy of my Occupational Therapy background but I do use other approaches - I am not married to it!
In fact, I am married to Mike and have been since he and I were teenagers! Our three youngsters have grown up and started to build their own lives and careers. I have been a beach comber for the last 7 years – just love being surfside!
